How to Schedule a Book Signing

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

How would you like to sell more copies of your book? Would you like to read excerpts from your book to a captivated audience?

Book signings are the cornerstone of an author’s post-publication foundation. But how do you set them up?

Organizing book signings, readings, and public appearances is one of the most important parts of a successful marketing campaign.

A book signing or reading is a bookstore event that features you and your latest book. This is your opportunity to meet potential buyers face to face. Plus it adds a personal touch to your promotion efforts. Many customers may feel more motivated to purchase a copy of your book if they hear it explained or read from your point of view. And the opportunity to get a copy signed by the author doesn’t hurt, either!

Independent book stores and larger chain retailers both organize book signings. Your chances for finalizing an appearance are greater with the independents. They have to compete with larger chains and are therefore more willing to support local authors. In order to pinpoint potential book stores, check your local newspapers or see if book retailers in your area offer a “calendar of events” or post upcoming events on a public bulletin board.

By asking around for the owner of the store or the communications manager you can typically find the appropriate person with whom to discuss your event. In many cases, both the large and small retailers will have their events planned weeks or even months in advance. Plan early.

When you have a list of people and/or stores you plan on contacting, prepare your pitch. Have a small script that outlines what your book is about and why people would be interested in meeting you or reading the book. The store manager or PR person will most likely ask. If your subject matter is timely, all the better! Remember, this is the point during which the store manager or book buyer will be screening your presentation skills, either over the phone or in person. If they are not captivated by your presentation, they will have very little faith in your ability to captivate a crowd. Be extroverted and dynamic.

It also helps to be concise. Understand that these are busy people. You want to sell them on your event fast. Have your press release and/or sell sheet ready. It’s helpful in case they ask for a copy or if they ask about specific information about the book. They may want to know the retail price, the retail margin, and the ISBN number immediately so they can order a review copy themselves prior to deciding. Advise them of the publication date after which they can order the book wholesale through the Ingram or Baker & Taylor databases, or retail from your own webpage address. Provide them with your URL. They might be impressed enough by your initial marketing initiatives to go forward with the book signing.

Offer to help them with promotion. Especially if you’re targeting smaller book stores, they will be more interested in offering to host an event if they know you will be absorbing some of the burden of marketing it. Tell them all your friends and family will be attending the event (and then make sure to invite your friends and family!), and if it’s within the scope of your marketing budget, offer to advertise in the local paper at your expense. Remember, the easier it is for the book store, the more likely they’ll say yes.

Follow-up with prospective book stores who have not confirmed dates. Selling yourself and your book is a number’s game, and as any salesperson will tell you, the amount of contact is directly proportionate to the amount of sales. So be persistent without being annoying. If, after three or four unsuccessful attempts with a particular store or person, move on to another prospect.

Using Online Article Submission Site Category Email Alerts to Help Article writing

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Can an online article author write better and more informative articles by reading more articles from other online article authors? I believe so and since this in article number 7112 that I have written let me tell you a little secret that I do. When I write on a subject I know nothing about I think of what I might search on the Internet to learn more.

Actually I think of a question I have about the subject. Guess what, if I am thinking this so is someone else in the world with a question out there somewhere? Hello Internet.

Next I take that question and make it my title and then search the Internet using that title to see if anyone else is using it and well what pops up? Generally my question turns out to be a sentence in one of the 65 Billion pages now online! Great are you with me so far?

I constantly scan other authors articles in subjects I intend to write on and learn all I can from their perspective without losing my nave perspective of the possible Internet surfer. Now I have many perspectives and keep growing that each article I read.

But how do I find all these articles on a giving subject? Well, I really like Wikipedia and EzineArticle, both have hundreds of thousands of pages of information you see?

Well, I scan the articles written on the email alerts on the top online article submission website and read up on the categories where I lack knowledge to further my personal knowledge so that in the future when I have an idea, I have some knowledge to draw from.

Additionally I very closely follow my gut instinct and intuition on things and rely on my diverse observations and experience of my own life. This will round you out as a writer to indeed write better online articles.

Too many writers are closed off in their own little worlds and whereas that does bring the world different perspectives, which can be good. It is also important to be a rounded person and therefore this will help you in your writing. So please consider this in 2006.

Born Again! – Adding Drama to Your Writing with Birth Stories

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Most people think of stories about birth as warm and cuddly pieces, filled with glowing parents and happy babies. The truth, of course, is that there are as many ways to be born as there are people to experience them. And while every birth story contains two important characters – a mother and a baby – there is a whole slew of other participants that can make for a not-so-heartwarming piece.

Does a good drama have to include a birth? Certainly not. However, having discussed last month that emotions are inherant to a dramatic piece, the beginning of new life certainly seemed a good place to, well, start. A mother of three, I can testify that the birthing process contains a great deal of emotion – and I didn’t even swear at my husband.

There are a miriad of stories to tell, however, that aren’t so bright and cheerful. Consider the first chapter of Dean R. Koontz’ ‘Lightning’. A mysterious stranger stops the doctor from delivering baby Laura by kidnapping him until the delivery is concluded. The stranger ties up the doctor and delivers a lecture on sobriety and a warning that the doctor will die if his habits are not changed. Once the baby is born, the stranger cuts the ropes partway and leaves, never to be seen again. Talk about an intriguing birth story that never comes near a baby!

Or look at the birth of poor Wade Hamilton in ‘Gone With the Wind’. To Scarlett O’Hara, who cannot flee burning, Yankee-assaulted Atlanta until Melanie has delivered the new baby, the new life is nothing but a nuisance.

Consider the Greek goddess of wisdom, Athena, who sprung, fully formed, from her father’s head. Now that’s the way to go – mom skips not only the delivery but also the anxious teen years!

And no matter what you believe, it is difficult to deny that story of Jesus and his birth still has reprecussions around the world. If nothing else, consider the fate of the other baby boys born in Bethelehem at the same time.

I’d like to conclude with a real-life occurance of birth I experienced before I ever married or had children. My sister dropped out of high school and wound up pregnant at seventeen. Despite promises that my mother would help her raise the baby, my sister decided to put the child up for adoption. The tense atmosphere of the delivery room hung over everyone as my mother struggled with her emotions, feeling pushed out of her natural place as grandmother by the adoptive mother. Emotions ran high that day, and not all were warm and happy.

Stories about birth have serious potential for drama. I’d like to challenge each of you to consider childbirth from a different angle – or even from the everyday angle – and write a short story.

Internet Video Clips Can Be Superb for a Organisations Profit

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

You probably already know how advantageous posting your organisations short format promotional video is. For an organisation’s online marketing manager, promotional videos are a valuable medium that can help to capture your customers’ attention and substantially improve the overall amount of users to your firm’s website. Web video clips are awfully effective in attaining the target consumers’ rather short attention span. Moreover, if codes are used & video sharing is encouraged, short format videos can be an excellent way to get one-way incoming links and thereby positively affect your firms rankings on the search engines.

If truth behold, video commercials have turned out to be a significant media for business or self endorsement. The following are a few tips to circulating your own Web video clips.

Firstly, you can post your Internet videos on your own company site; although this would involve you to find your own video hosting arrangements. Ask your online hosting solutions company if video downloading or video streaming options are supported. Vidify offer unique video production and distribution solutions. Visit the website.

Video downloading is where your company visitors must download your video commercial to their PC’s hard disk. They need to store the short format video commercial to their own PC before they can play it using their personal computers video player or a downloadable video player software. There are numerous video downloading service suppliers that cost nothing. There is also a progressive downloading mechanism where your web visitors can play the online video clips at the same time as downloading them.

Video sharing streaming on the other hand utterly does away with the requirement to download the Web video clips and permits instantaneous playback so it presents the most convenience to your viewers. Naturally, getting a video hosting company that supports video streaming can cost you a pretty penny.

And finally, the more fashionable way to circulate video commercials is posting your sites to video distribution web sites which possess their very own video hosting infrastructure. These web sites cost you nothing to become a member and will from time to time give you money upload video clips. What’s more, also have a substantial market base & reach; for instance, YouTube gets about 10 million Web users every month.

Stuck? Develop A Writing Topic Fast

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

Every writing task goes more swiftly when we’ve developed a writing process that just WORKS for that particular tasks. I like having checklists that I go through for each task. This means that you can write no matter what, because you’ve got a clearly defined process. First you do this, next this, next this… until the article, book or Web site is complete done.

The following “develop a topic” technique is useful if you need to write something to order quickly and don’t have a thought in your head. It’s also useful if you’re bored with whatever you’re writing and want to goose up your creativity.

You can use this system to write articles and essays. You can also use it to develop material for business writing, to write anything from a report to a proposal or a manual. You can certainly use it to write fiction as well; it’s handy to work out character motivation and plot.

Start with a topic, condensed to one word, for example “oranges”. (The fruit.)

Turn on a timer, or look at your watch, and spend ten minutes free-writing about oranges.

(Free-writing: write as quickly as you can, without thinking, and without taking the pen from the paper or your fingers from the keyboard. Don’t go back to reread or to correct typos or grammar.)

At the end of ten minutes, read what you’ve written, and circle interesting words, sentences and phrases.

Choose one item (word, phrase or sentence) you’ve circled, and spend another ten minutes free-writing about that.

=> The development stage

At the end of 20 minutes, you’ve got around four to six pages of material. Most of it’s useless, but that’s fine. Circle the interesting stuff, and copy it into a fresh sheet of paper. If you’re working on your computer, just cut and paste it into a new document.

You’ll notice that at this stage, you don’t have a theme, premise, slant or angle. However, you will have enough material so that you can ask some questions. Write down provocative questions.

Now go looking for new material to answer those questions. If you’re writing for publication, you may interview primary sources, or do some research. If you’re writing about oranges, for example, depending on which publication you were writing for, you could interview orchardists, nutritionists, gene scientists, or horticulturalists.

When you’ve answered your questions, you’ll be able to work out your slant on the material. A slant is an angle. The angle you take depends on the publication. If it’s a health magazine, your angle could be: oranges cure cancer, or oranges prevent cancer. (Note: I made these two slants up. Neither one’s true as far as I know.)

When you’ve decided on a slant, you’ll need to structure your work to prove the angle you’ve taken.

Here’s an example of ultra-fast structure:

1. Tell them what you’re going to tell them;

2. Supply three proofs (examples, anecdotes etc):

3. Tell them what you told them.

Now you’re ready to write your article, essay, booklet, brochure or Web site.

The major benefits of using this process to develop a topic are: you have a system to follow, so you don’t waste time, and since you’ll create way more material than you need without stress, you eliminate procrastination.
